old ways

time flies
and we all know it
and we’ve all seen it
and we’ve all shaken our
heads at it

but I sat down with
the great divide fellas
over a cup of coffee last week
and cut through the years
and the b.s. with one gut laugh

and it felt good

and it seemed like a
rip in time…
some sort of funky worm hole
we all crawled out of

those of you who knew our story
know that it wasn’t a pleasant
split and not unlike a bad divorce

but bands break up

I whined once to ray hubbard
and he deadpanned to me:
“hell son, even the beatles broke up.”

but after a while a year turns into
two and then three, etc…

it’s like when you’ve talked to someone
too long to ask them their name…

I hadn’t talked to a couple of the
guys in 8 years

yet there we were
and it was very surreal

we grew up together
and did not take no for an answer together
and knew so little about the music
business that we weren’t scared of it all

reminds me of the guy clark line:

“he did not know that he could not fly, so he did.” – from THE CAPE

I admit I carried around a lot of
mixed up negative feelings about that
band for a long time

maybe, enough time floated by
that all of the negative faded away
and now there are only the thoughts
of  the good times and laughter

maybe this is what you do
when you get older

I imagine mending fences that can be
mended is never a bad thing

it felt really good to hug everyone’s neck
and honestly apologize for any hurt I may
have caused them by the choices I made

and still stand by

and would make again

I’ve always followed a weird voice
in the back of my mind,
call it what you will

and the path hasn’t always
been pleasant or easy

and more often than not
it has left me humbled
and far from exhalted

but I’m still in awe of an
E chord distorted and blaring
out of a speaker

and mumbling until I hit
the right babble stream and following
it down
without editing for as long as I can

so I keep on rambling down the track

and I’m proud to be able to hear the name
The Great Divide again and be proud
of what we accomplished as a group

and not let the pettiness and weakness
steal an ounce of enjoyment
that everyone in that band deserves

I’m glad we can still call each other friends

after all is said and done, there are times
when I was a lousy friend

the love was there,
but the tools needed sharpening

and time does hone that blade

Great Divide. The band name is so ironic with the end of the ride for them. All I know is that many of my memories of my time in Stillwater have something to do with TGD… concerts (many), dancing at the ‘Weed to the Music, road trips with TGD cd’s shuffling, or jus “backroading” on the red dirt roads around Payne county. I still listen to them, and it always brings back sweet memories of the special time in life when you’re a broke college kid living the lyrics of “College Days”. Thanks guys, wherever ya’ll are.

one more thing…. i’d pay a bootload of cash for a ticket if TGD would do a reunion concert in Stillwater, USA. Can we start a petition?

Great blog mike. The music ya’ll made was really special and turned me on to a whole lot more. Life makes us all hard and we usually make it harder. Makes me think I need to mend some fences of my own.

Wow this blog was so awesome. I loved TGD. In my college days we always had the music on at our parties and outings. I too would love to see a reunion. I love their music and I love Mikes now. Its like having the best of both worlds. Keep up the good work mike and keep the music flowing..

Really great to see this blog after all these years. TGD’s music has had a huge influence on my life. More so than I ever thought it would have. From starving for two weeks to buy my first guitar because I couldn’t afford both on a college kids budget to countless nights on back porches playing, singing and trying to write music, is all because of the work you guys put together. For that, I am very thankful. Those were some great years. I still have that guitar, even strummed “Yesterday Road” last night while sitting on the couch watching tv last night.

Every now and then its Great Divide day on the stereo at my house, looks like today will be another one…….

Lastly, I’ll throw this one out there like everyone else. Reunion show would be great…..I’d pay any price for that ticket.

Even if I had to sacrifice food for two weeks again……..

I didn’t even catch on to TGD or your music until I heard 12 pieces – then I got it all! Really good to mend fences and yes – getting older changes everything -

I am so happy to see a reunion happen. I have been a fan since the very beginning and have always loved you with and without the band, but it will be so nice to see you all back together.

TGD music & endless road trips to see you guys was such a huge part of me & my husbands courtship that reading this puts a giant lump in my throat. I have no words. But we will be there any time any where. We dusted off our old CDs not long ago & they all still moved me. The songs, the lyrics, the drum beats still move me.
